Christine Scherman, Artist

Throughout her childhood, Christine could be found everywhere drawing. As a child she painted and drew gargoyles & dragons & fantastical creatures as she followed her diplomatic family into the Far East and South America. Later, as a corporate professional, she could be found flying to Russia or the Ukraine or Hungary - sketching in hotel rooms and airports and during board meetings. Today, she devotes all of her time to designing & producing unique pieces of decorative art in the historical traditions of Europe & America.

Scherman studied at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C. and The Isabel O'Neil Studio in New York. She follows in the footsteps of her father, Robert Klein, whose oil paintings have been exhibited throughout the East Coast. Christine's work has been featured in exhibitions throughout the United States, including shows at the Arader Gallery & the Ritz Tower in New York City, The Obscurities Gallery and in many stores on the Eastern seaboard. Her work can be found in many private collections throughout the United States.

Scherman teaches & paints in New York City & Stowe.

Artist Statement

I get enormous satisfaction in creating these pieces from flea market discoveries, the cast-offs of estate sales and just stuff.

I will take an object–whether it be a rolling pin or an armoire–and with paint, my imagination, and the imagination and desires of the client–will create a painted object unlike any other in the world.

I work closely with my clients, interpreting their words into an original piece of art . Each piece becomes a reflection of the client.

"Art is everywhere, except it has to pass through the creative mind."
Louise Nevelson

The painted finishes I use were developed in the centuries past–and very nearly vanished in our mechanized age. With the training of the Isabel O'Neil Studio, Pierre Finkelstein and other noted decorative and faux painters, I have developed my own style–remaining true to the elegant traditional techniques–with a touch of whimsy and humor. Inspiration is everywhere–from the period rooms of the museums, to the castles in Bavaria & Lebanon, to the gargoyles and the architectural conceits of the city streets. From this I create enduring treasures.

"I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free."
